Bill O'Reilly Claims He'll Be Safe From Bernie Sanders' Evil Socialism In Ireland (HA!)

Why doesn't somebody look that up in the dictionary –“think”? And then look up “belief.” You'll find that they don't quite coincide!

Jean Shepherd, WOR FM, New York, August 8, 1964

During a broadcast of The O'Reilly Factor on January 14, 2016, host Bill O'Reilly vowed to Fox News Chief White House Correspondent Ed Henry that he would leave the United States if Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), known for his socially progressive views, is elected President this coming November.

“[Bernie Sanders] wants to dismantle [Medicare and the Affordable Care Act] in the sense that it would be Berniecare and it would be much more than it is now. And you know, look, I’m fleeing. If Bernie Sanders gets elected president, I’m fleeing. I’m going to Ireland. And they already know it. I shouldn’t say it publicly because that will get Sanders more votes. But I’m not going to pay 90 percent of my income to that guy. I’m sorry. I’m not doing it.”

Here, Bill O'Reilly shows a poor understanding of how the U.S. government handles money. Though the salary for the office of President of the United States, currently $400,000 per year, comes from taxpayer dollars, the billions of dollars collected by the Internal Revenue Service are stored in the U.S. Department of the Treasury's coffers.

There are other essential details that Bill O'Reilly is not taking into account. Though the Tax Policy Center predicts that Bill O'Reilly, being that his yearly salary from Fox News comes to $18 million, would be subject to an effective tax rate of 54.2% if Sanders became President and implemented his tax increases on the top earners, if Bill O'Reilly moved to Ireland, he would not only also have to pay a little more than half of his income in taxes, but also would be subject to U.S. taxes, as neither of his parents nor his grandparents were born in Ireland, thus making him ineligible for Irish citizenship unless he opted to donate a hefty chunk of change for the benefit of Ireland's economy.

Though O'Reilly has frequently shown a disdain for universal health care, as he for all intents and purposes believes that it enables poor people to steal from the rich, he would be shocked and surprised to learn that Ireland's hospitals are directly run by the government, the doctors therein are government employees, and that the Irish get to enjoy free basic medical care.

O'Reilly would also be appalled by Ireland's strict gun laws, being that prospective gun owners must apply for a firearms license and can be easily turned down, and that the only guns that are allowed to be bought sold and owned in Ireland are those used for hunting and target practice.

Indeed, if Bernie Sanders did get elected and Bill O'Reilly did decide to follow through with his promise to flee to Ireland, he would end up looking exceptionally foolish. Of course, he would have brought it upon himself. Then again, how the hell can we expect an uppity, self-righteous, reactionary slob like Bill O'Reilly not to be stunningly, hilariously and embarrassingly provincial?
